“PHANTASMAGORICALS”
Original Works by
Marsha Lipsitz
April – June, 2011

Marsha Lipsitz has worked primarily in clay and mixed media sculpture for the last 12 years after retiring from teaching art in the New York City school system.   She has been most interested in non-traditional surfaces for clay such as melted glass and wax.  Her work has been shown at Celedon Gallery in Water Mill, at Gone Local in Amagansett, at Ashawaugh Hall in Springs and the Gallery at the East End Arts Council in Riverhead.   She has had shows in New York City, Savannah, Georgia, and her work is in many private collections throughout the country.

This new series of masks and sculptures- “Phantasmagoricals”- has been created from materials found on the streets, in dumpsters, trash bins, and friend's basements.  I became fascinated with the intriguing and unusual forms of the pressed molded paper used to contain fruit, eggs, wine bottles and electronic equipment found thrown away everywhere.    I love the process of re-imagining, re-purposing, and re-using these materials in a new way.   My hope is to engage viewers in amusement, wonderment and fun in seeing these discards recreated.
